Which expedition cruise company do you work for?

I have the privilege of working with Golden Galapagos, an expedition cruise company part of Golden Experiences. We specialize in providing luxury sustainable cruise experiences in the Galapagos Islands.

What do you think sets your company apart from other expedition cruise operators?

Golden Galapagos is committed to preserving the Galapagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site, through responsible tourism. The company holds a carbon-neutral certification and offsets its emissions under the UN program, ensuring that every journey supports the long-term health of this unique ecosystem. Sustainable practices like efficient waste management, water conservation, and using biodegradable products further minimize the environmental impact. By adhering to strict navigation and landing regulations, Golden Galapagos protects the delicate ecosystem while offering guests a luxury experience that allows them to enjoy the islands responsibly. Top cuisine, intimate wildlife encounters, and small-group expeditions are what make it an unforgettable experience too. In partnership with local communities and conservation organizations, Golden Galapagos supports educational initiatives and scientific research to safeguard the islands’ extraordinary biodiversity, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

Do you have a favourite destination that you always recommend to first-time expedition cruisers and if so, which destination is it?

One of my favourite destinations in the Galapagos Islands is Devil’s Crown near Floreana, widely regarded as one of the best snorkelling spots in the archipelago. The vibrant marine life and crystal-clear waters make it an unforgettable experience. However, when recommending it to first-time cruisers, I always consider their individual preferences and fitness levels. During initial communications, I get a sense of the traveller’s physical capabilities, as some guests may share any limitations they have. Since Devil’s Crown requires a physically demanding swim in open waters, I make sure it’s suitable for the guest before suggesting it. For those seeking a less strenuous experience, we can offer alternative, equally captivating destinations to ensure they enjoy their Galapagos adventure to the fullest, regardless of their fitness level.

If you could design your dream expedition cruise itinerary, what would it include?

My dream Galapagos expedition would be an unforgettable 8-day itinerary, carefully crafted to showcase the islands' incredible wildlife and dramatic landscapes. The journey would feature iconic stops, such as Española Island to witness the waved albatrosses and blue-footed boobies, Genovesa Island for sightings of red-footed boobies and frigatebirds, and Fernandina Island for the unique flightless cormorants and marine iguanas. I’d prioritize activities like snorkeling and kayaking in pristine waters to encounter sea turtles, playful sea lions, and vibrant reef fish. To balance the adventure, cultural experiences would include a visit to a local community on Santa Cruz Island, offering insight into island life. I’d also include an overnight stay at a highland hotel like the Royal Palm to connect with the island’s essence. Small group sizes are key, providing an intimate, environmentally conscious experience that maximizes wildlife encounters and minimizes impact.

What are your top three travel hacks for making the most out of an expedition cruise?

The top 3 travel hacks to make the most out of your Galapagos cruise are:

1. Bring an excellent DSLR camera with two lenses: one for capturing long-distance shots and another for close-up wildlife moments. The islands’ landscapes and wildlife deserve the best shots!

2. Invest in a good underwater camera like a GoPro. The underwater wildlife in the Galapagos is breath-taking, and having a camera to capture those moments will make your experience unforgettable.

3. Prepare to disconnect! While some ships now offer Wi-Fi, I recommend embracing the opportunity to disconnect. There’s something truly special about being out at sea, enjoying a good book, or simply listening to the waves, free from the distractions of the digital world. Let your friends and family wait until you’re back to share your adventure!

Which lesser-known destination do you think deserves more attention from travellers?

Lignum Vitae in blossom @Vladimir Cruz

In the city of Loja, there’s a stunning tree known as Lignum Vitae, locally referred to as árboles de guayacán. This bright yellow tree bursts into bloom during the first week of January each year, offering a breath-taking sight that many would surely enjoy. However, the tree’s location in the parish of Cazaderos requires a 6-hour ride to reach. While the annual spectacle is worth the journey, the long ride might be too tiresome for some to experience this natural wonder every year.

If you could only visit one destination for the rest of your life, which would it be?

I haven't had the privilege of visiting all the places on Earth that I dream of exploring. So far, I’ve visited 12 countries, and I make it a point to visit 1-2 new countries per year. Ask me again in 20 years what my favourite destination is, and maybe then I'll have a more concrete answer!

The one thing you take with you wherever you travel:

The one thing I take with me wherever I travel is a deep, unrelenting curiosity. While it’s not a physical item, it’s the driving force behind every journey. This curiosity compels me to explore the unknown, step out of my comfort zone, and seek out the stories hidden in every corner of the world. It leads me to wander through historic streets, sample unfamiliar foods, and engage with locals who offer invaluable insights into the heart of their culture. This sense of wonder allows me to embrace the unexpected, discover beauty in everyday moments, and connect with places and people on a profound level. Ultimately, it’s this insatiable desire for exploration and connection that defines my travels and helps me see the world in all its complexity and richness.
