Emerging - Building the Foundations of Responsible Expedition Cruising

These operators are at an early stage of developing and formalising their approach to responsible expedition cruising. They may already have positive initiatives in place, but
these are not yet consistently embedded across the wider organisation.

Operators at this stage are beginning to establish the policies, responsibilities, partnerships and programmes needed to support a longer-term commitment. Participation in the framework demonstrates a willingness to assess their current position, communicate more transparently and identify practical opportunities for improvement.

Developing - Demonstrating Growing Commitment

These operators have established a range of responsible tourism initiatives and are actively developing a more structured and consistent approach. Their work may include environmental management, responsible wildlife encounters, guest education, community engagement, conservation or scientific collaboration.

Policies and programmes are increasingly being formalised, although progress may vary across different parts of the business. Operators at this stage are demonstrating growing commitment and taking practical steps to extend responsible practices across their operations and guest experience.

Integrated - Responsible Practices Across the Business

These operators demonstrate a clear and consistent commitment to responsible expedition cruising, with relevant principles integrated into many areas of the organisation.

Their approach extends beyond individual projects and can be seen in operational decision-making, environmental stewardship, relationships with communities and destinations, guest education, conservation activities and scientific partnerships. Responsibility is becoming part of how the business plans, operates and delivers its expedition experiences.

Embedded - Leading Through Action

These operators have embedded responsible practices throughout their organisation, with established policies, defined responsibilities and evidence of action across
multiple areas of the business.

They can demonstrate a measurable commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible engagement with communities and cultures, guest education and the long-term protection of the destinations they visit. Responsible expedition principles play an important role in both day-to-day operations and longer-term business planning.

Contributing - Creating Positive Impact Beyond the Voyage

These operators combine deeply embedded responsible practices with meaningful contributions that extend beyond their own voyages and immediate operations.

Through leadership, innovation and sustained partnerships, they are helping to advance conservation, scientific research, community benefit, destination stewardship and wider industry best practice. Their work contributes not only to reducing the impact of their own operations, but also to creating positive outcomes and supporting the continued development of responsible expedition cruising across the sector.
