Progress over perfection

 

Responsible expedition cruising is an evolving journey, not a single destination. Operators vary considerably in their size, fleet, geography, resources and operating model. A locally owned operator and a large international expedition cruise company may demonstrate responsibility in different ways.

The stages should therefore not be interpreted as a simple ranking of “good” and “bad” operators. Instead, they show where an operator is currently positioned within the framework and recognise its commitment to transparency and continued improvement.

Every participating operator receives feedback identifying its strengths and opportunities for further development. By completing the assessment annually, operators can demonstrate progress and potentially move to a new stage.

 

How travel advisors can use the framework

The ECN Responsible Expedition Framework is first and foremost a communications tool. Each participating expedition cruise operator receives a badge showing its current stage: Emerging, Developing, Integrated, Embedded or Contributing.

The badge allows travel advisors to see at a glance where an operator is on its responsible expedition journey. The description accompanying each stage explains what that level represents, creating a simple and consistent starting point for conversations with operators and clients.

The framework does not provide a detailed public assessment of each operator or replace your own product knowledge and due diligence. Instead, it helps make a complex subject easier to understand, gives sellers a common language to use and supports clearer, more confident conversations about responsible expedition cruising.

 

What the framework is - and what it is not

The ECN Responsible Expedition Framework is a voluntary annual self-assessment and communication framework. It is intended to improve transparency, recognise genuine progress and encourage continuous improvement across the expedition cruise sector.

 

It is not an official sustainability certification, a formal audit, a pass-or-fail assessment or a public league table. Participation is voluntary and does not constitute an endorsement of every aspect of an operator’s activities.

What participation does demonstrate is a willingness to provide evidence, communicate more openly and engage in a structured process of reflection and improvement.
