This year, I have been fortunate to step aboard several expedition ships—something I believe is invaluable for truly understanding expedition cruising. For travel advisors, nothing beats first-hand experience: moving around the ship, attending a lecture with the expedition team, or even just sitting through a safety briefing. Whether it is a full voyage or a short ship visit, it all helps bring the product to life.
So when the opportunity arose to join Oceanwide Expeditions’ purpose-built MV Hondius on a short sailing from Vlissingen (the company’s homeport in the Netherlands) to Aberdeen, I jumped at it. Below is a snapshot of the company, the ship, and the experience. I hope it proves useful for those looking to better understand this pioneering expedition cruise brand.

About Oceanwide Expeditions
Oceanwide Expeditions is a Dutch, family-owned operator specialising in polar voyages. Known for their adventurous, off-the-beaten-path itineraries, they were the first in the industry to introduce the concept of a ‘basecamp’ expedition—activity focused expedition voyage.
The company operates four ships: MV Ortelius, MV Plancius, MV Hondius, and sailing vessel SV Rembrandt van Rijn. With the exception of the sailing ship (which remains in the Northern Hemisphere), the others operate in both the Arctic and Antarctica. Itineraries include unique voyages such as visiting Snow Hill Island and remote expeditions into the Weddell Sea—proving Oceanwide’s reputation for pushing boundaries in tightly regulated environments.
Notably, in 2025, MV Ortelius reached 78°03.471'S—the furthest south ever reached by a non-icebreaking passenger ship.
Oceanwide is an excellent fit for clients who prioritise time ashore and want to immerse themselves in adventure: think mountaineering, snowshoeing, polar diving, and even snorkelling. Combined with excellent value for money, it makes for a compelling proposition for active travellers.
About the Ship: MV Hondius

Launched in 2019, Hondius is the largest ship in Oceanwide’s fleet, accommodating just over 170 guests—still below industry averages for expedition vessels. My superior cabin on Deck 6 featured ample storage, large windows, a comfortable bed, and all the essential amenities for remote-region travel.
What struck me most was the ship’s no-nonsense expedition focus:
Large open deck spaces for wildlife viewing
An open bridge policy
Well-sized cabins
A highly experienced and passionate expedition team
Excellent, hearty food
Notably, Hondius lacks some amenities that have become common even in expedition cruising—such as a gym or observation lounge. This is a conscious design choice that aligns with Oceanwide’s ethos: less focus inward, more focus outward. It is something to be aware of when matching the ship to clients—particularly those who are used to maintaining daily exercise routines onboard.
The Experience

Sailing from Vlissingen was a treat—especially as the Oceanwide head office team came out to wave us off, reinforcing the close-knit, family feel of the company.
Travelling with a small group of travel trade professionals from across the UK and Europe, we were treated to:
Informative briefings by Oceanwide’s sales managers
Lectures from expedition team members on Arctic and Antarctic itineraries
A guided Bridge visit with the Captain
Birdwatching sessions and daily recaps typical of an expedition voyage
During our sea day, it was inspiring to see guests lining the decks with long lenses and scopes, scanning the waters for wildlife. Northern gannets, guillemots, and a small pod of dolphins all made appearances—highlighting the passion of Oceanwide’s guest base, many of whom were seasoned nature lovers.
We arrived early on Saturday into Aberdeen—an unusual port call for Oceanwide, which typically avoids conventional stops. From there, we were handed over to Visit Aberdeenshire for a brilliant day exploring:
Crathes Castle and its gardens
Lochton of Leys Farm, where we met the famous Duchess the Highland cow and saw Clydesdale horses
A fly-fishing demonstration, followed by a warm welcome lunch hosted by a local MP
It was a fitting end to a short but insightful journey—and left many of us wanting to return, not just to Scotland, but to sail again with Oceanwide Expeditions.
Final Thoughts

MV Hondius and Oceanwide Expeditions are a perfect match for active, adventurous travellers who value authenticity, time on land, and a true expedition experience. It is not a ship for those who want bells and whistles—but rather one that keeps your focus where it matters most: the polar environment.
For travel advisors, understanding the difference in experience—and matching clients accordingly—is key. Trips like these are a timely reminder of the importance of personal insight in selling expedition cruising.
